Roughly 50 automobiles have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they reported in a statement.
Officers say they were notified late on Wednesday, when a resident discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.
The substance had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then located many other vandalized cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Officials report initial examinations show the substance was likely human blood.
"At present there remains no indication as to where it came from; officials are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in relation with the event," they added.
Local authorities stated they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for information.
A senior political figure stated the incident left him without words and needed to be addressed rapidly.
"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on online, mentioning the murder of nine people by a shooter targeting individuals of foreign heritage in February 2020.
